Ce qu’en disent les journalistes…

Jazz got the memo about diversity a long time ago, and 2023’s best Canadian jazz recordings span the gamut from roaring, contemporary big bands to intimate ballad duets. From hard-swinging small ensembles to genre-defying projects that mash-up jazz, folk and chamber music in the most agreeable way.

BEST LARGE ENSEMBLE ALBUM: Fortunately the Sept. 14, 2019 concert that l’Orchestre national de jazz de Montréal gave was recorded. The engineers caught lightning in a bottle, resulting in the album Miles Smiles | Wayne Shines. Arranger and director Jean-Nicolas Trottier crafted dazzling new works based on the 1960s output of his heroes Wayne Shorter and Miles Davis, and the soloists that leap from the fabric of Trottier’s material are all on fire. Look no further for proof of the breadth, depth and seriousness of Montreal’s jazz scene. – Peter Hum, Ottawa Citizen
